A brief history of Cordon, with Roselyne, a heritage guide, who will help you discover rural life... as you wander through the village, learning how people adapted to the climate and the slope of the land, and how they used natural resources... ;
Cordon features a scattered settlement pattern centered around the springs, which are numerous in the village. The traditional, east-facing houses shelter the animals on the lower level and the people on the upper level, all under one roof. The hay stored upstairs allows the livestock to be fed without having to leave the house during heavy snowfalls. The local materials used are wood, river stone, and, after 1840, granite. The washbasin, the bread oven, and the granary—all located nearby but out of reach of the fire—complete the layout of these “farmhouses,” designed to withstand the long winters.
