The listed Baroque church of Notre Dame de l'Assomption
Its history, construction, and Baroque decorations:
Construction began in 1781. It was designated a historic monument in 2004.
This late 18th-century church—with its location in the center of the village, its size, its decoration, and the frescoes commissioned by the Cordonnants—displays an extraordinary harmony of colors.
Since the restoration of its decorations in 2011, it has regained its original appearance.
Baroque elements from the earlier castle chapel have found their natural place here. The monumental altarpiece, all in green and gold, catches the eye as soon as you enter. The dome at the crossing of the transept—invisible from the outside because it is low-slung—rests on four pendentives, which, in architecture, facilitate the transition from a square to a circular plan. The “trompe-l’œil” decoration accentuates its depth.
Everything—the altarpiece, the high altar, the frescoes, the dome, and the statuary—perfectly illustrates the religious message of the era.
