Located at the Col du Jaillet, it marked the border between the Ceutrons and the Viennois (Allobroges) at the beginning of our era. At an elevation of 1,723 meters, it symbolizes the provincial boundary of the Roman Empire. It was designated a historic site in 1966.
This granite boundary marker, erected by the Romans in 74 AD, marks the border between two Celtic tribes: the rebellious Ceutrons and the Allobroges, who had submitted to Roman rule in 121 BC. The inscription on it, “Fines,” comes from “Ad fines,” which means “At the boundaries” in Latin. There are two other boundary stones in the municipality, one at the Col de l’Avenaz and the other at the Petit Croise Baulet. These boundary stones were also designated as historic monuments (in 1997). The route then followed the Aravis mountain range, passing through the Pointe des Aravis, L’Etale, and Mont Charvin… A booklet published by the Cordon Heritage Association is dedicated to them (available for purchase at the tourist office).
